Higher Yearning with Hank Brown
The snow settles on the spindly tree branches on the still University of Boulder campus this February morning, while inside the Wolf Law building, Hank Brown drills the students who have braved the previous night’s storm to attend his legislative law class. And frequently, there’s that Hank Brown moment, the wry grin and smiling eyes that signal the humorous zinger he’s about to deliver. It is the same smile he used with a special Republican joint Senate-House caucus on Capitol Hill earlier that month, when in lobbying for increased money for higher education. 282_ Lloyd Lewan - Leadership Beyond Management Dr. Lloyd Lewan, Keynote Speaker, Colorado Ethics in Business Awards
enclosure-voiceWe live in a time of great division. Nations against nations – religions against religions, complicated competition with foreign countries. We have a growing underclass in the world and we really don’t know what to do with it. And there are so many other moral, scientific and economic dilemmas we face. As Lincoln said, “A house divided cannot stand.”

We must find men and women who can face these challenges with a much wiser set of denominators and understandings. Lloyd Lewan was the keynote speaker at the annual Colorado Ethics in Business Awards (CEBA). He had hundreds of attendees on the edge of their seats as he detailed prescriptions for leadership and ethics.

Colorado Ethics in Business Awards 2007 Photo Album"The best guarantee for the future of this country of ethics, is to find and develop the finest leaders, for at the heart of any leader is and ethical base. I frankly believe leadership is the DNA of any nation, of any business, of any organization, or any home.”

You can listen to Dr. Lewan's entire address right here - 35 minutes from an exceptional program - Colorado Ethics in Business Awards Keynote Address.

CB-30_ Tech Startup of the Month - From Colorado to Denmark
Sunil Cherian, CEO, Spirea, Inc."There are lots of new technologies being developed in renewables and the distributed-power areas, but when it comes to actually putting that together as a comprehensive solution, there’s a big gap in the market," said Sunil Cherian, the CEO of Spirae Inc. "There aren’t very many people who can take these new technologies and do the right things with it. That’s a key problem in the market, as well as an opportunity." The company’s largest project is developing new tools for Denmark’s natural gas and electrical system operator, Energinet.dk, one of the most progressive utilities on the planet. CB-26_ Universal Languages - It's All in the Translation
Mike Taylor, CObizColoradoBiz TodayBeatriz Bonnet is president and CEO of Syntes Language Group, a translation and interpretation firm based in Centennial that last year generated revenues of $1.8 million, a 73 percent jump from the previous year. Bonnet is formally educated in the universal language of music, but her business for the past two decades has been in translating actual words. Predictably, a lot of her firm’s business comes from translating services for companies intent on tapping the huge Hispanic market in the United States. She estimates the U.S. Spanish-speaking market to be about 40 million. Additional languages are commonplace.

Pat Wiesner, ColoradoBIZBefore I started Wiesner Publishing some 26 years ago, I had been through a rough period for a couple of years. I had helped to build another publishing company and had gotten pushed out. It all ended one night at dinner in Colorado Springs. We had a stand-up shouting match that ended with him saying," You can’t quit. You’re fired!" or I said, "You can’t fire me. I quit!" I don’t know which. Read the entire column at ColoradoBiz. CB-23_ There's a Reward and Price to Pay for Risk
ColoradoBIZ June 2007 CoverYegor Drozdov possessed an appetite for risk that was evident in his gutsy launch of an Audi-Volkswagen dealership in the Boston area while he was still in his 20s. Born in Russia, Drozdov had moved to the United States when he was 13, and to hear friends tell it, he sought out all the experiences and adventures he could. But that thirst for thrill also caused Drozdov’s Longmont business partner, Chad Clark, concern — not only for his friend’s well-being, but for the health of the car dealership they were gearing up to open in Longmont..   Related Links: Complete Story || Colorado BIZ Today || Find It || PodCast Directory || Channel: COBIZ > Keywords: Colorado Business Magazine, COBIZ, Mike Cote, Global, Culture Clash > Read More 6/4/07

Colorado Companies Share Lessons About Going Global - Culture Clash
Mike Cote, ColoradoBIZAmericans like to get business done and then go out for dinner and drinks. In Europe, expect to spend a lot of time socializing first if you want to clinch the deal. That's part of the culture clash. "In Europe, it’s about establishing the relationship," Jeppesen senior vice president Greg Bowlin told a group of business people Thursday in Denver at World Trade Day. "We shouldn’t expect the Europeans to act like us." Going global means deciphering the maze of trade agreements, exchange rates and labor laws, but all that is immaterial if you haven’t bothered to bone up on the most important subject: Culture. Vitamin Cottage rides health-conscious wave. When Margaret Isely began going door-to-door in a business that would become Vitamin Cottage, it was 1955 and the benefits of natural foods and supplements were largely unknown to consumers. So Isely, who had embraced vitamins and natural remedies to treat her own health woes, typically would loan out books on the subject and return to the houses later to discuss the reading materials and take orders for vitamins.

244 Why does everything always cost more than we have?
Pat Wiesner, ColoradoBIZPart II in a series on the startup challenges of Wiesner Publishing. In our household, as our six kids were growing up, occasionally money would get thin. Either my wife or I would extend our arms, palms up — the universal sign for being out of money — and say, "Where did it all go, Blanch?" referring to some comedian somewhere who used the line incessantly. Then we would both chuckle and sit down to figure out what we were going to do. Point: In family financing as well as in business, the job to be done will always expand beyond the money available to do it. Either you do something different or get more money.
