692_ Founder and Chair of the Mozilla Foundation discusses open source software
Lucy Sanders, the CEO for the National Center for Women and Information Technology or NCWIT along with Lee Kennedy and Larry Nelson, spoke with Mitchell Baker, founder and Chair of the Mozilla Foundation. She just received the "Women of Vision Award" from the Anita Borg Institute. This is the next in the Entrepreneurial Toolbox Series - a series focused on different subjects entrepreneurs need to know about. We've talked about networking, failures, business competitions, how to get an NSF SBIR grant, and today they are discussing open source. Mitchell went onto define the parameters, "Open Source is software which is available for use under license, meaning under terms which meet certain criteria. So the software has to be available in a way that says it's free of charge; you're free to access and have the source code version of the software (that's the version that human beings can understand) - you can get the source code version free of charge, you can use that version however you want. I can take a piece of open source software, I can change it, I can modify it, I can brand it differently, I can make a new product out of it and I can use that product either myself or as the basis of a commercial business. So the ability for you to get access to the source code, to change it and the ability to do what you want with it is the core criteria for being open source." There's more...

Steve Baker says, "The number one secret to success is knowing what you don't know and seeking those who do. None of us can have all the answers, though we sometimes think we do." Of course, Stephen Replin, attorney and money expert offers this sage piece of advice, "Don't go in under capitalized... that seems to be the number one cause for business failure, more than anything I can think of. Larry asked them both to identify and talk about the top three suggestions for new entrepreneurs. Their backgrounds and business experiences offer a treasury of ideas. The history of the Telluride Tech Festival now comes to Boulder

The Telluride Tech Festival is '@ Boulder' this year which is a great opportunity to involve some local folks here, and with some of the changes in the economy it's a little more accessible. Larry talked with Sarah McClain, Trent Hein and Ned McClain about the great news for Front Range technology enthusiasts. Larry asked Sarah to give us an idea of what this event was about. "We're talking about the annual Telluride Tech Festival which was an event we founded in Telluride in 2000. It was founded on the idea that Telluride was sort of an incubator of inventions. In 1891 Nicola Tessla, George Westinghouse and L.L. Nunn invented the first commercial grade alternating current power plant in Telluride. That's why we say the beginning of the technological revolution began there. Our event invites technological innovators from around the world to come and present their ideas to us in a small, intimate environment, and it's very interactive. Inside the event and even outside the event we have opportunities to interact with the honorees and sort of foster discussion and ideas." Some of the past honorees are Freeman Dyson, a theoretical physicist; Vinton Cerf, known as the 'Father of the Internet'; Murray Gellman, a Nobel Prize Laureate; and Jill Tarter, she heads up SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence). This year it's in Boulder at the NCAR Mesa Top Lab, a really excellent venue. So, mark your calendars for July 30th, that's a Thursday evening and we're going to gather at 5:30pm. It's FREE - But You need to RSVP. We'll see you there...

Introducing the Greener Denver Business Program
- Going green brings in the green
CORE partners with the Denver Office of Economic Development in creation of Greener Denver Business, a new training and support program for local businesses interested in “going green.” Greener Denver Business takes an innovative approach to supporting small to mid-sized business owners in their efforts to go green. Larry sat down with Graham Russell, Executive Director of Connected Organizations for a Responsible Economy (CORE) and Betsy Long, Director of Education Programs for CORE and who is coordinating the efforts for the support program CORE and the Denver Office of Economic Development are putting on together. They answered a series of questions including: How did Greener Denver Business come into existence? What is CORE’s role in the program? What are the benefits for participating businesses? Why should businesses invest in going green during an economic downturn? How can businesses get involved in Greener Denver Business? From the Denver OED home page: Your participation is an important step to running more efficiently, reducing your energy expense and developing ideas for programs, policies and practices that can translate into profit. Our goal is to provide resources to evaluate and reduce your company's per capita energy needs. We plan to support and build recognition of your efforts by identifying best practices and providing reports of their success. Graham and Betsy share some important details.

Cirque du Soleil celebrating 25th anniversary in Denver - KOOZA
Cirque du Soleil is celebrating their 25th anniversary. Started in 1984 by a few street performers, there was no tradition of circus in Quebec at all. So there were a few street performers that gathered for a couple of summers and started to put shows together. In 1984 there was a big celebration in Quebec City and the founder decided to put together a show that would be going to that celebration in the city. The Cirque du Soleil KOOZA show is coming to Denver starting Aug 20th so Larry took the opportunity to interview Luc Tremblay, Senior Artistic Director for Cirque du Soleil. Luc went onto describing KOOZA. "We have a trio of three young contortionists from California. They're a different kind of contortionist, they move very fast, the choreography is very inventive, so that's very original. We have a trapeze artist who won a gold medal at a circus competition in Paris. We have a mini cycle duet, a high wire act from Spain, it's actually a double high wire and is set diagonally across the stage so the vision of the act is quite interesting. The second act opens with, we call it the 'Crooner Act', it's very funny. It's followed by an amazing act called "The Will of Death". This is the first time we've put such an act on a touring show. We have artists from about 14 different countries on KOOZA." There's more to listen to and we'll see you at the Pepsi Center 8/20/09.
