Jeffrey Pearl, Managing Partner, IP5280 John Scarborough, Managing Partner, IP5280 Who are the winners going to be in the mobile device space
enclosure-voice 957_ 1/24/11 - We are back with IP5280's Jeffrey Pearl and John Scarborough, this time for the Colorado 50 Companies to Watch 2010 Winner Series. We've got background on IP5280 and want to remind you to check out their last interview <<Transformation in the telecommunication industry - 5/24/10>> because we're going to cover new ground here. We start out with a question on the minds of many, What does the merger between Century Link and Qwest mean? John Scarborough said, "It's a pretty significant merger. For Colorado, it is regrettably, another corporate icon, and that's not going to be good for our economy. There's certainly going to be job implications and direct implications to our local economy. That's the biggest impact to us." It is difficult to watch this transpire, but on a high note, John points out, it will translate into new opportunity for entrepreneurial companies like IP5280. Larry asked, "What are some of the keys to success in Colorado's Companies to Watch?" Jeffrey replied, "John and I and the executive team talk a lot about culture - keeping a positive atmosphere, it's fast paced, people can learn new technology, advance in their jobs day-in and day-out, that's really important. Also the hiring process, we're pretty careful about who we bring in, they've got to fit into that culture. On top of that we've just got a lot of cool technology, a really hot market, everything is moving to IP with video on the rise and all those cool things, it's a great place to work." John added, "Voice over IP is gaining credibility, it's gaining legitimacy and it is being adopted very quickly. The big trend at the moment is mobile voice. You know, just as voice over IP is a direct threat to the traditional telephone companies, to the traditional landline services that we all grew up with, so too is mobile voice a threat to the cellular companies that make all these mobile phones operate with that. Now with the proliferation of Wi-Fi communications virtually everywhere you go from Starbucks to your own house, as you enable these mobile devices, cell phones, iPads, iTouches, any kind of device that is able to gain a Wi-Fi or IP connection, that can now be turned into a communications device - a phone in essence. It will begin to directly challenge the traditional mobile community." Then they showed Larry a video phone discussion with one of their clients. "People are familiar with tele conferencing, we now have desktop versions, basically on the phone. We call it the Jetson phone, like the cartoon. We believe that most, if not all of our phones, in the next six to nine months, will be video enabled." Listen as they discuss the iPad and more...

Dick Hinson, Aurora Economic Development Council, Sr. Vice President Funding was a big part of the program
enclosure-voice 954_ 1/24/11 - Funding was a big topic at the CU Technology Transfer Office Awards banquet. Larry interviewed Dick Hinson who is the senior vice president of the Aurora Economic Development Council. Larry asked, "What's your view on funding today?" Dick replied, "Tonight they've been talking about venture funds and creating a fund of funds in Colorado, to help fund new startups, things like that, moving along the path of 'proof of concept'. I think this is critical because that is the stumbling block for a lot of business development over the past couple of years. You know, the liquidity freeze, the banks haven't been making loans, so it is very very critical that these funds are made available so businesses can expand, do research in areas and the commercialization of what they're trying to do. Larry asked, "Aurora is a very active participant in the business community. Is there anything you're doing in this area as it relates to funding?" Dick replied, "Right now we see a lot of development across the Fitzsimmons/Anschutz Campus that's starting to occur because a developer (Corporex) came along bringing their own funding. They were able to do their own projects and then they had some local help. But that's the critical thing. If we can get the funding, there are a lot of projects ready to go. We've seen this in the Colfax corridor, projects that are ready to go but have been stopped in their tracks for the lack of funding. Over the past couple of years we've seen that same sort of venture capital sort of dry up in Colorado. Hopefully, and from what we've heard here tonight, maybe this is loosening up a little. Once that happens a lot of businesses are going to be able to take advantage of it." Listen now...

John Hickenlooper as Mayor of Denver, 2004 Mayor Hickenlooper Talks About the Future and the Past, June 2004
enclosure-voice 1/18/11 - "Leaders are made not born!" This statement elicits the questions, What is it then, that makes leaders? Is there a leadership formula? If we follow the rules can we all be leaders? Being a leader is not an accomplishment. It is an ongoing process. It's a process that capitalizes on strengths and overcomes challenges with a powerful energy. Mayor John Hickenlooper, is the quintessential example of converting a challenge into an opportunity and then onto success. During this “Profile of a Leader” interview you’ll hear how he achieves and how he was motivated to be a winner. It’s a one-of-a-kind story you won’t hear somewhere else. Larry and Pat Nelson conducted this interview in the Mayor's office one year after he was elected and during a time he was throwing baseballs with Governor Owens. You'll hear the Mayor in his own words explain why he is the way he is..

Brad Feld – Profile of a Leader: November 2004
Brad Feld, Foundry Group Photo taken in 2004 1/18/11 - Everything is changing. All the rules are changing…or are they? SOFTBANK Venture Capital became Mobius Venture Capital. Brad Feld cut his hair (unlike Samson, he did not lost his strength). Are these changes symbolic, superficial or just a sign of our changing times? Leadership in changing times has been elusive to so many organizations… great leadership that is. Some say leaders have learned from their experience. We’ve heard people proudly point out they have 18 years experience… In truth, have they merely had one experience 18 times? Yes, leaders do learn from experience, but it’s the distillation of all the good and challenging events that makes the difference. Brad’s mother and father had a great impact on him…personally and professionally. Along the way in the business world (starting at age 15 in Brad’s case) there were others that also influenced his beliefs and values. He learned from some tough lessons as well as from his successes. Brad shares some of his "learning experiences" in this provocative interview. Brad also offers some advice to entrepreneurs. We should all listen to this guy. He shares some golden nuggets, his career turning point, and much, much more. This could be the next step in your career, maybe a turning point. Listen now, as Larry & Pat Nelson of w3w3 Talk Radio unveil some pages in Brad Feld’s life.

Timothy Rodell, President and CEO, GlobeImmune at the Tech Transfer Awards Gala,
1/18/2011 We have actually had a big year
enclosure-voice 957_ 1/24/11 - Larry interviewed Dr. Timothy Rodell, the President and CEO of GlobeImmune at the CU Technology Transfer Awards banquet. Larry asked, "It's been over a year since we last interviewed, what's happened during that time?" Dr. Rodell replied, "We've actually had a big year. We completed a large, mid-stage trial in Hepatitis-C patients. To remind you, what we're doing is to use genetically engineered yeast to stimulate the immune system so that it recognizes foreign invaders, and those can be either infectious agents or cancer, it recognizes them and fights against them. What we've now shown in Hepatitis-C is by using our products (called tarmagens) to augment the response, we can actually increase by 25% on a relative basis, the percentage of patients that are cured. So this was a big year for us because I actually could stand up in front of the company, for the very first time and say, "what you've been doing for the last seven years is going to result in people being alive 20 years from now who ultimately would have died of their disease. So that's a really exciting thing. What we're doing now is getting ready for the final stage of trials, called pivotal trials, that could lead to approval and open up commercialization. We hope to start those trials, perhaps by end of 2011. They will run for about two years after that. This is a very challenging time for financing small companies and 2010 was an improvement over 2009 and a major improvement over 2008. But we still have a long way in front of us. So what 2011 is about for us is getting ready to run those pivotal trials in Hepatitis-C and figuring out how we're going to finance those trials..." There's much more, listen now...

Vic Ahmed, President & Chairman, TiE Rockies Helping companies expand their business
enclosure-voice 957_ 1/24/11 - We've interviewed Vic Ahmed many times over the years and it is particularly exciting today. TiE Rockies, with Vic as president and chairman, has put together a plan for the future of TiE in Colorado. Things have dramatically changed since 2008, and Vic said, "We have to re look at the things we've done in the past and what things we could change and improve to better serve the local entrepreneurial ecosystem." Balan Nair, CTO at Liberty Global, Sureel Choksi, previously with Level3, John Kelley (past CEO, McData), Joe Zell, Grotech Ventures, along with Vic makeup the board of directors. Vic is very excited to have this dynamic and influential group who will take TiE to its next logical destination. "In this context working with the board, and an outstanding group of charter members, we've come up with a very narrowly focused plan. TiE has always done networking, mentoring and educational sessions and will continue to do those. But now we're going to have a focus around three areas. The first and foremost is, funding. We know that Colorado has been challenged with sources of funding, especially in the VC arena - We don't have that many active funds in Colorado anymore. So all the more important to find a bridge to Silicon Valley. In that context we have formed a significant relationship with Plug and Play of Silicon Valley. We're introducing a TiE 50 program where we highlight companies; and then TiE itself has a new group, TiE Angels who make early stage investments. So we are basically launching these programs for the Colorado ecosystem, to assist companies get funding, something which is in dire straits right now. So, that's the first part. The second area TiE is focusing on is helping companies expand their business. "For that", Vic said, "you only have to look at our history. Larry you have been a great supporter of TiE. But TiE has a special connection with India, because of its roots from Indian entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley. We are a powerhouse in India, and India is now the fourth largest economy. No longer is it a destination for only getting IT work done." Vic talks a great deal more about expanding. "The last focus area they've added is Cleantech. "That clearly, remains an area in which Colorado is seen as a global leader. I think it is an opportunity for us to highlight that to a national audience, not just a local audience."

Alan Beaulieu, President & CEO, Economist Institute Trend Research Business trends for the next 12 months
enclosure-voice 953_ 1/18/11 - Larry's first question, "What do you see for the next 12 months?, business trend-wise..." Keynote speaker at the ACG Denver business luncheon, Alan Beaulieu provided a fast summation that went like this..."Mild recovery, Slow job growth, Housing market going nowhere in a hurry. We're going to muddle along, but we'll look better than a lot of nations, so the dollar should be fine." Chet Marino and ACG Denver brought Alan Beaulieu, President of the Economist Institute Trend Research, back for an expert's view of the year ahead. He covered a variety of topics including local and national trends as well as some fun topics like taxes, interest rates and a general outlook for the US economy and the stock market. Larry asked, "What do you see financially, for those trying to raise money, mergers, what are some of the challenges and choices?" Alan replied, "The good news is the banking industry is beginning to loosen up and they're lowering their credit standards some, they have plenty of cash. The big inhibitor to lending right now, believe it or not, is the federal government. The regulators are saying no, no, no, and the banks are looking for reasons to say yes. As the Christopher Dodd/Barney Frank legislation settles down and regulations are written, the idea is that banks will figure it out, regulators will figure it out, money will start flowing again and that should make for a very healthy 2012. We'll get through 2011 and probably have a great 2012. It's nice... companies are growing again, companies are hiring again, and so we're going to enter into a more relaxed, as far as stress levels go, but I do want your listeners to know this..." There's much more, listen now...

Social networking and social gaming winners
David Asseoff, Adperioenclosure-voice 952_ 1/18/11 - In this '50 Colorado Companies to Watch' interview we were surprised to hear Adperio, one of the winners started 16 years ago. Larry Interviewed David Asseoff, President & CEO, Adperio which is very involved with social networking and social gaming. Adperio transitioned to the Internet in '98 when they launched their first online venture called MemoLink.com - an online rewards and loyalty program. "When online gaming got hot about four years ago", David says, "we saw an opportunity to work with these gamers and monetize their applications by inserting advertising into their gaming programs." that's how they got into social media, which coincides with the rise and growth of Facebook and of course so many of these games that millions of Americans are playing every day, and it's only getting bigger both here in the U.S. and abroad. Larry understands that, but wondered if bigger companies are embracing this as part of their branding, their business online. Of course the answer was 'very much so'. A few years ago many Fortune 1000 companies didn't understand the potential or the reach of this advertising vehicle/medium, casual gaming within social media. But today you have many very large brands like 7 Eleven, McDonalds, Green Giant, various insurance companies and verticals that have been up in TV, radio and print for years, but have now adopted this online vehicle and found its potency. Adperio works with large companies like Netflix and Discover Card, and help them acquire new customers online through these channels, such as casual gaming. Adperio is a Colorado privately held company, with about 50 employees, recognized as a fast growing company - but the differentiating points... One is they offer full transparency to their clients. What's interesting is the average gamer is a 43 year old female with a household income of $50 to $75,000...listen, there's more about this CCTW winning company...
