Naresh Mandava, MD, Professor and Chair of the Department of
Ophthalmology, Inventors of the Year, Anschutz Medical Campus awarded by the University Colorado Tech Transfer Office Dr. Malik Kahook, an associate professor of ophthalmology, Inventors
of the Year, Anschutz Medical Campus awarded by the University Colorado Tech Transfer Office Inventors of the Year, Anschutz Medical Campus
enclosure-voice 1008_ 5/2/11 - We are here at Rocky Mountain Lyons Eye Institute to talk with Dr. Malik Kahook, an associate professor of ophthalmology, and Naresh Mandava M.D., Professor and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, Inventors of the Year, Anschutz Medical Campus awarded by the University Colorado Tech Transfer Office. Malik said, "The award that we received recently centered around work that we are doing jointly using a base polymer for devices that are surgically implanted or injected into the eye to either induce changes that would improve a disease process or introduce medications into the eye that would treat the disease process over time. So a depot of medication, if you will, using a polymer based system." Naresh pointed out, "The exciting thing about the technology is that it's applicable to so many diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, potentially even common things like cataracts. So we're very excited that these polymers that haven't had a place in ophthalmology will have place in treating these troubling diseases. They also have an active collaboration with members in the Department of Bio Engineering. Larry asked, "What advice would you give to researchers and scientists in this coming year or two? Malik, "Growing up, I always got the advice from my mother; In order to be successful you've got to surround yourself with good people. The idea for research, being the baby of the clinicians and scientists is something we should look after with similar advice - Surround your idea with good people. So the No. 1 advice I'd like to offer is, Surround any idea with the right team members and that's going to guarantee success." Naresh, "My advice is along the same lines. I think collaboration is key. I think being passionate about what you're researching is key. Malik and I are fortunate in what we do is taking care of patients every day, we know where the holes are in terms of traditional modalities of treatment we have for diseases like glaucoma and macular degeneration and really we are very passionate about what we do. You have to be driven, have a goal in mind and don't be afraid to fail." Listen, there's much more.....

Elder Care is a pro bono, free service
Chris Pelley,
Managing Partner, CIMCO and Michael Meurer, Meurer Law Offices and Elder Care Expert enclosure-voice 1006_ 5/2/11 - Anxious and bewildered, families of veterans and the elderly usually deal with the complex issues of caring for their loved ones after a crisis hits. Because they are unaware of how to protect their personal assets or what benefits are available and how to apply for them, families risk losing much, sometimes all, of what they’ve worked so hard to accumulate. Larry discussed this program with Chris Pelley, Managing Director of CIMCO and his guest Michael Meurer of Meurer Law Offices. Chris' friend at CIMCO Kansas City, explained that Elder Care was a pro bono, free service with a call center in St. Louis, with a number of experts in this wide range of Medicaid, Medicare, Veteran's Benefits, that very few people know about and that it is provided for the community at large. It occurred to Chris that looked a lot like Social Entrepreneurship (as we all know, Chris' great passion). So he listened and he learned that it could in fact help many people in the Rocky Mountain region in terms of addressing the problems for their elderly parents. That's the service and now we are going to help promote that program here. Denver-based CIMCO has joined ElderCareUSA™ to assist in their free program for seniors and their families and caregivers in Colorado. ElderCareUSA is a growing, national network of elder law attorneys and financial professionals who are experts in the field of elder planning and can help with issues related to long-term care. This includes education about a little known VA pension called Aid & Attendance (A&A). CIMCO has been selected as the exclusive Registered Investment Advisory for ElderCareUSA in the Front Range region. Elder Care Assistance is a free program designed to put families in touch with legal and financial professionals that understand all of the rules ...There's much more ...listen now...

Brad Feld, Managing Director, Foundry Group Brad Feld: Community college to MIT
enclosure-voice 1004_ 4/25/11 - This is part 2 of Brad Feld's Interrogation. Jill Van Matre, Associate Director of Atlas and co-moderates this last Entrepreneurs Unplugged event for Spring 2011 with Brad Bernthal (BB) who is a clinical law professor at the law school and Director of the Silicon Flatirons Center Entrepreneurship Initiative interviewed Brad panel style. Part 2 begins with Professor Bernthal’s query: "Take us from the community college to MIT and the start of Feld Technologies." Brad replied, "I was your typical high school kid in Dallas, I did well in school, ran track. I was moderately social when I wasn't reading or playing with my computer. I was a pretty good tennis player until, I discovered computers and girls. And those two things ruined my tennis career when I was about age 14. I never really thought about where to go to college." (Here we have the two-and-a-half minute video, View Video- the MIT experience.) It was the girlfriend... in 8th grade - she was fascinated with MIT. and that stuck in Brad's head so he applied. He got in early and threw away all his other college applications. So, he went to MIT and MIT was a fascinating place. Brad says he's glad he went there. It was the right place for him. "Because," he said, "MIT is a daily assault on your self-esteem. You realize there is no such thing as being the smartest guy in the room... forget it, there's just no way that's going to happen. So that dynamic plays forward in your life when you realize you don't have to be the smartest person in the room to be successful and accomplished. But, you have to work hard, you have to be focused, you have to go after something you really care about. and that's how I got to that place where I started what became Feld Technologies. Next week, Jill Van Matre asks Brad to talk about the beginning of Feld Technologies.

Jim Franklin, Founder Institute Start your dream company in 2011
enclosure-voice 1002_ 4/25/11 - Larry interviewed Jim Franklin the 2011 co-host of the Colorado Founder Institute. Jim joins Jon Nordmark as the co-host. Jim said, "Because I am Boulder-based and also a TechStars mentor, I am often asked about the differences between TechStars and the Founder Institute. The key difference I see between the two programs is the overall goal: at TechStars your team will be in Boulder full-time and demo your work at Investor Day. All TechStars participants form an operating company by the end of the program. With the Founder Institute you will get an education on what it means to be a founder from others who have been there and done that. Most of the participants are operating a new company by the end, or shortly thereafter, but some just keep working their day job until the moment is right for them. In addition to TechStars, we have many resources for entrepreneurs in Colorado, and all of them have their differentiating points. Here’s what I see as unique aspects of the Founder Institute: You can keep your day job. You don’t have to relocate to Boulder. If you graduate you contribute 3.5 percent of your company to a pool that is owned by you and the other graduates and mentors from your class. You are quite literally invested in the success of your peers. The mentors are exclusively experienced CEO's and founders – no service providers. If you are ready to commit 15 hours a week for 14 weeks to get your next business ready to launch, I look forward to helping you.. And whether or not you launch your business, you will be a much better-informed founder when the time is right." Jim should know as he is a successful serial entrepreneur. Application for New Founders is due May 1, 2011 ...There's much more ...listen now...

Governor John Hickenlooper, Colorado Gov. Hickenlooper, at the ACG Corporate Growth Conference
1009_ 5/2/11 - When in the restaurant business, Governor John Hickenlooper recalls hearing nearly everyone around him complain about their politicians, local and federal "...senators, state legislators, council members, governors, mayors. I came to this recognition at a certain point “This is the United States of America, right? The government is us. And, we were moving to a place where people were becoming so anti-government, they became almost anti-investment in the community. I think that if people could see the landscape of international economies now, and it's not just China and India... and Brazil, in the next several years probably will be the 5th largest economy in the world. That landscape is moving so rapidly now, the rate of change has accelerated and I don't think we have the luxury of partisan politics and apathy, and downright antagonism to government - and ultimately this is America, the government is us. That's how I was goaded into running for Mayor in the first place. We ran a positive campaign, I wanted to pull people together, I was elected. We haven't had a recession this difficult since the Great Depression. Many of the jobs we lost, as the economy recovers, those jobs are not coming back. We're going to see more and more people that were trained for a career, planned for a lifetime in this occupation - and they don't have a job anymore. I relate to that directly. Part of what we're trying to look out at as the State Government is, what are those elements A.) How do we get the economy back on track and B.) How do we make sure that we're retraining people throughout the State of Colorado to be ready for those new jobs as they become available." This is the first, in a series of video vignettes, taken from the Governor's keynote address. Stay tuned for more ...VIDEO

Video, Watch: Governor John Hickenlooper, ACG 9th Corporate Growth Conference

Luke Beatty, VP, Yahoo, Inc. Sold it to Yahoo almost one year ago
enclosure-voice 1007_ 5/2/11 - The ACG Corporate Growth Conference Opening session,'CASE STUDY - Associated Content's sale to Yahoo!', with Luke Beatty, VP, Yahoo!; Founder, Associated Content. was engaging, and high energy - w3w3.com's Larry Nelson caught the man whose story was strong enough to open this great conference. And we really mean caught here, as Luke was flying out the door to get back to his office in Denver. He had a brief few moments for this interview. Luke Beatty is Vice President & General Manager of Yahoo! Contributor Network / Associated Content. Contributor Network, an evolution of the Associated Content platform enabling people to publish their creative content on Yahoo!’s media properties. Associated Content – which Luke founded in 2005 and was acquired by Yahoo! in 2010 is known as the Web’s first crowd sourced media platform. Larry asked, "What are the toughest challenges for companies with the environment we've just gone through?" Luke replied, "The biggest challenge is, you know every business has the challenges of growth. I think the biggest challenge is that growth is almost a requisite that it be sort of global and I think that is a huge challenge. To be tasked with the opportunity to grow your company globally is.. There are a lot of things now that make it easy to grow globally, but there's a lot of blocking and tackling that needs to be done in order to do that. And so I think that's hard. No matter who you're talking to, there is no way to snap your fingers and make your company global." "Now what do you think are the biggest opportunities for companies now?" Luke pointed out, " Broadly, I think the biggest opportunities are engagement opportunities. I feel like companies now have, beyond brick and mortar experiences, have the opportunity to reach so many people. And again, that may be the global concept, but the opportunity is reach. Like your Internet Talk Radio show, compare what it is now to what it would have been 20 years ago. You could touch anybody in the world today. I think reach is the opportunity for businesses, but it is hugely challenged." Luke went onto give more advice for entrepreneurs ...Listen now...

Awesome tools for you and also for your business
Laura Fitton, Oneforty.com, NCWIT Hero enclosure-voice 1003_ 4/25/11 - This is part of a series of interviews that we are having with fabulous entrepreneurs. Women who have started “IT” companies in a variety of sectors, all of whom have just fabulous stories to tell us, about being entrepreneurs. Lucy Sanders, CEO for the National Center for Women and Information Technology or NCWIT along with Larry Nelson, Director of w3w3® Media Network interviewed Laura Fitton, CEO and Founder of Oneforty.com. Lucy points out that Laura is known as the 'Queen of Twitter'. Oneforty helps people understand Twitter and the exploding ecosystem of applications and services built on it; and Oneforty has been called the 'app store for Twitter' by TechCrunch and others. Back to 2006, Laura moved to Boston, with no business network she's going to start her communications consulting firm there, after nearly 2 1/2 years out of the market. So she gets into blogging, hears about this Twitter thing. She blogs about how stupid this Twitter thing is (March 2007) and then two months later, says Laura, "the nickel drops." Laura realized she could surround herself with successful, interesting people and still be this home-based mom of two kids under two and yet stay motivated and inspired throughout her work day. And that is exactly what appealed to her about Twitter when Twitter finally did appeal to her. Laura tried hard not to be an entrepreneur, she worked for one in her twenties and "the guy was nuts!" You have to be fundamentally out of touch with reality on some level, because otherwise you'd know your idea can't possibly work. You have to have enough detachment from that to go and make it work, which is great!" Laura has a number of valuable tips about using Twitter and then goes onto some great advice for entrepreneurs. Listen for more...
