Focusing Corporate View on Unseen Assets
Michael Hess, Founder, Blind Institute of Technology [BIT]enclosure-voice 1423_ 8/26/13 - Larry interviewed Michael Hess founder of the organization, Blind Institute of Technology (BIT). Mike started BIT with one mission in mind, and that is to bridge the gap between the Visually Impaired [VI] Community and the corporate environment. He is making an impact with the 80% unemployment within the visually impaired community. Mike is a very determined young man and, of course, he has a connection with this community and that connection only makes his story that much more impressive. Michael Hess is legally blind and a technical professional. Michael said, "I've learned how to leverage what I call, 'Tips, Tricks and Technologies' to my fullest advantage to overcome the very real obstacles that you will encounter in the corporate workspace." The federal government actually spends on average, and statistics show, as high as $11 Billion annually on the visually impaired community alone. And yet, Michael has been able to earn a six figure income for the last third of his career, out there in the private, very competitive, very visually centric workspace. Now he wants to take his education two-fold... he wants to teach other visually impaired community members the tips tricks and technologies that he's used to overcome the visual obstacles. He's also out there talking to executives with amazing organizations locally, Denver Water, Denver Health, Cricket Communications, Avaya, Webroot, Liberty Media, amazing local companies about the true asset which is the blind individual. "We have a lot of assets that we bring to the game every day that corporations are looking for. Natural innate skills like..." Listen for more...

Chris Pelley, Larry Nelson & Les Haberenclosure-voice 1414_ 7/29/13 - Are you familiar with the Child Abuse Prevention Project? Les Haber takes us back to the founding days, in Florida in the late 80's - early 90s. When Les arrived in Colorado he wanted to maintain his work with the project and started to look for the group here in Colorado. When he found it, he was disappointed because the Front Range CAP was so under funded. Today, Victoria Strong is the executive director, she's a wonderful person and one of only two facilitators that go into the school system and facilitate with these kids so they know they can remain safe, strong and free. Les met a financial planner and expert on retirement and retirement incomes - he does seminars - and he said, you put people in a room for me to talk to and we'll give all the money to Front Range CAP - It 's for the kids of Colorado. Les feels a lot of people don't understand, but Les is passionate in his belief that we have to stand up and join together to protect our children here in Colorado. Listen for more... Kathleen T. Pellely, Author Kathleen Pelley, Children's Author and Philanthropist
enclosure-voice 1206_ 5/7/12 - Kathleen Pelley's passion for stories stemmed from listening to them. She was born in Glasgow, Scotland a country famous for its heather dappled mountains and a treasure chest of stories. Her gentle Irish father also loved to feed Kathleen his own tales of fairies, leprechauns, and banshees. As an elementary teacher, Kathleen loved teaching language and history and drama. "In my classroom I always made plenty of time for reading stories aloud to my students, no matter what age they were." After moving to the States in 1990 with her husband, Chris, an American, and their two daughters, Kathleen was extremely homesick. "Writing helped to soothe the hurt in my heart, and soon I was sending off my stories to publishers." Kathleen's first book was "The Giant King", set in Scotland, is about kindness and how you can tame a fierce giant with kindness. But the most important thing about the book is that it is published by a no-profit publisher, the Child Welfare League of America. This publishers doesn't make any money for itself - all the proceeds they make goes to help vulnerable children who've been abused or neglected, suffered family disruption, or a range of other factors that jeopardize their safety, permanence, or well-being, throughout America. Recently CWLA decided to make a CD of the book, narrated by Kathleen, which has won an award from the National Association of Parenting Publications. And Kathleen, as she's always done, uses the little bit of profit she makes from this book to help a children's home in Zimbabwe. "My family and I have been involved with Makumbi Children's Home in Zimbabwe, Africa—a home for AIDS orphans, where one of Kathleen's brothers has worked for the past 25 years." Kathleen's most recent book, just came out, "The Sandal Artist" and is illustrated by Colorado artist, Lois Rosio-Sprague. You can meet Kathleen in person at the Tattered Cover in May 12, 2012, at the Highlands Ranch location and for people who don't know, we will be celebrating Children's Book Week and that afternoon with illustrator Lois Rosio-Sprague Kathleen will officially launch her latest book, The 'Sandal Artist'.

Billions of dollars to help higher education
Karan Khemka, Partner and Head of The Parthenon Group Asiaenclosure-voice 1444_ 9/30/13 - Larry and Pat were invited to an up-scale event at the Innovation Pavilion by Christopher Pelley, CEO and Private Wealth Advisor of CIMCO Cares. After the eye-opening meeting, they had a chance to interview the keynote speaker, Karan Khemka, Partner, The Parthenon Group, which is a management consultancy - but a big part of their work is in the education sector. Education institutions, whether it's Harvard University or a private school, in the end they function like companies. Larry asked about the U.S. comparison to other countries. Karan tells us, in the U.S. 4% of college/university students are international students, compared to the U.K. which is at 17% and Australia at 28%. This begs the question, why would the U.S. say that this is the correct or acceptable penetration of international students when the U.K. and Australia have maintained very high quality higher education systems with far higher levels of international student penetration. If the U.S. were to double the international student population to 8% that would be an additional 700,000 students, and not all of these would be full fee paying, but let's say half-a-million were full fee paying, and they were coming in at $25-$30,000 a student - that is an incredible amount of revenue - billions of dollars to help balance the books of higher education. To put money into research, funding and scholarships. So there is an incredible opportunity to do good while serving international demand for one of the most desirable products the U.S. has. Your higher education is really the crown jewel amongst the products you can sell to the rest of the world. Listen for much more...

Corporate Social Responsibility and Business Ethics
Francy Milner, J.D., Associate Director for Campus and Community Partnerships at Leeds School of Business, University of Coloradoenclosure-voice 1421_ 8/19/13 - Larry interviewed Francy Milner, the Associate Director for Campus and Community Partnerships at Leeds School of Business, University of Colorado Boulder - she has some great and exciting news for Boulder. She has been teaching in the area of social responsibility and social entrepreneurship at the university for the past eight years, starting out with Corporate Social Responsibility and Business Ethics. Francy is also part of a center here called, Center for Education on Social Responsibility at the Leeds School of business. A few years ago, Francy created an undergraduate course (and then a graduate course) in social entrepreneurship. Francy points out, "What's the difference? Most people don't know. Social Responsibility is the company taking into account all of their shareholders, consumers and employees and the environment, etc. Showing responsibility more broadly. When we talk about Social Entrepreneurship, it's people who found an enterprise with a social or environmental mission. A purpose to do good. It might be to provide clean water - or access to credit in developing countries for people who don't have that access. Francy is also teaching outside the business school, in the ATLAS Program... and she will continue that. Francy said, "There's a new incubator for students who want to launch their own social ventures, it's called Watson University." Listen for more on this exciting news.

1396_ 6/17/13 - A day of thanks for the service and sacrifice of our veterans & active duty personnel to enjoy with family & friends! Mike Robertson, Robertson Wealth - Biz Talk Show Host Weekdays 7 AM -8 AM AM-1060 Straight Talk about the Ups and Downs of the Coming Market
enclosure-voice 1378_ 4/22/13 - At the 'Straight Talk' Luncheon Series, program last week, Chris Pelley, CEO & Managing Director of Capital Investment Management (CIMCO) introduced an old friend and today's keynote speaker, Mike Robertson, 'an experienced investment advisor'. Chris says, "Mike wants to share his wisdom and advice gathered over the years - he enjoys complex problem solving and helping people see there are better ways of doing things." Mike's radio show has been very successful in Texas for the past few years - they're now opening up in Denver, broadcasting weekdays from 7:00am to 8:00am on Denver radio, AM-1060 on your dial. Larry was really interested and surprised at some of the things Mike talked about that maybe coming up in this year and in the next few years... Robertson said, "Well, I'm really happy, like everyone, that we've done so well these last couple of years. You roll back the clock and talk to somebody about this time in 2009 - the market was just beginning to turn around. We'd gone through a devastating loss, the market was off by 57% and people were really depressed. Okay, it's recovered now. One of the things that's great about Americans is we wake up in the morning ready to conquer the world, but we also tend to forget history a little bit. So my concern now is that people are not preparing for the next time it's going to happen. I can't say when it's going to happen, the pull back in the market - There will be a pull back. How deep will it be? Who knows. Obviously we've done very well, we've come back a very long way. We have some systemic problems in the U.S. - We have way too much debt. We've got interest rates at zero, you have people that are investing in investments like stocks that have never been there before. There are people that literally used to invest in CDs that could get 7 - 8 - 10% on their CDs... they're actually going to invest in stocks now because that's the only place they can get in." The bond market? Your interest rates are practically zero - they peaked on September 30th of 1981 - interest rates have been dropping since that time. They've pretty well hit the floor now and there is really only one way to go now. They can stay where they are now, at zero. Or, they're going to go down in price as interest rates rise - at some point interest rates will rise... that's just the way it is, everything goes in cycles. The important thing to remember is to prepare for those cycles in advance. Mike's favorite quote, by John F. Kennedy, 'The best time to prepare the roof is when the sun is shining.' ...listen for more valuable information...

Learn about the true heroes living amongst us
Chris Pelley with General Joseph 'Bud" Ahearn enclosure-voice 1331_ 1/7/13 - It is always such a pleasant surprise to find and learn about the true heroes living amongst us. So often they are quietly leading their lives with never a word of what they've accomplished and often continuing to give us more. We think it's part of the fabric of what makes them the heroes they are. The Community Reach Channel, sponsored by CIMCO (Capital Investment Management Company) and our friend Chris Pelley, proudly introduce us to Bud Ahearn. Bud spent thirty-four years in the United States Air Force where he retired as a Two-Star General, building and managing Air Force bases around the world, and then 20 years with CH2M Hill and over 10 years with Engineers Without Borders. Chris said, "Bud has been a role model and a guiding light in the field of social enterprise, where business people and corporations can find alignment and purpose." After graduating from engineering school in 1958, Bud joined the Air Force, stationed at Camp Cook Air Force Base, now known as Vandenberg Air Force Base. Bud said when he arrived it was a couple of posts and a rusty chain. It was chosen to be a space base where their mission in life was to seize and maintain control of space. This first assignment was awesome and filled with heroic aspiration, "...and our nation fulfilled that." This is the beginning of Bud Ahearn's career. As awe inspiring as that is, his story continues - a story that touches the world and continues to inspire and impress. Learn more about our local hero, General Joseph A 'Bud' Ahearn...

Martin Faith, President, Scottish Group Companies and Dr. Douglas Jackson, President/CEO, Project C.U.R.E. Doug Jackson, Martin Faith, Summer Solstice Celebration
enclosure-voice 1217_ 6/4/12 - Planning to celebrating the Summer Solstice this year? You're invited to join Dr. Douglas Jackson, President/CEO, Project C.U.R.E. and Martin Faith, President, Scottish Group Companies at their very special event, Summer Solstice, Glass, Grapes and Gruyere. You will have the opportunity to make an impact in the world, have some great fun and pick up a rare piece of antique Scottish Stained Glass. When asked what advice Martin Faith would offer to entrepreneurs and business leaders, he said simply, "I would like to think people would run their businesses with a conscience and not just be in business to make money. To provide, obviously, valuable services to their clients but also to give something back to the community. When you do that you get it back ten times over - what comes around, goes around." Here is a man who walks his talk. In Scotland, for many years Martin collected these beautiful antique stained glass windows, it was his passion. When he came to the U.S. he brought his collection with him and sold a lot of them to pay for his immigration to this country. He's kept some beautiful pieces for himself. For several years he wondered what he should do with the rest. After he met Doug Jackson he knew what to do. Martin decided he would sell the collection and give the money to Project C.U.R.E. and the Summer Solstice, Glass, Grapes and Gruyere event was born. Dr. Douglas Jackson, President/CEO, Project C.U.R.E.
Doug said, "You know the neat thing about the solstice, it's the one day in the year where we get the most sun and what better way to celebrate the sun than coming through beautiful pieces of stained glass. It's exciting and we're hoping to raise enough to ship a container (we're talking about a semi truck trailer - or similar weight) and that is going to be worth about $400,000.00, because of Martin's effort. That's remarkable!"
Denver is the world headquarters for Project C.U.R.E. founded by Dr. James W. Jackson, (Founder Emeritus) in 1987, after visiting a small clinic in Rio de Janeiro. There, he saw patients turned away due to the lack of basic medical supplies and equipment. He made a promise that he would help provide relief to those people. Within 30 days of returning to his home in Evergreen, Colorado, Dr. Jackson had collected over $100,000 worth of medical equipment and supplies. He personally paid to have these shipped to that clinic. PROJECT C.U.R.E. builds sustainable healthcare infrastructure by providing the medical supplies and equipment that medical personnel need to deliver healthcare to their communities. Since its inception, PROJECT C.U.R.E. has delivered medical relief to needy people in more than 120 countries. PROJECT C.U.R.E. works with recipient partner organizations by donating the medical supplies and equipment they need to provide healthcare to the people in the local community. Meet these extraordinary men Thursday, June 21, for an evening of stained glass education, demonstration and donation with all the profits from the sale of this century old stained glass window collection going to help PROJECT C.U.R.E. deliver a 40-ft container of desperately needed medical supplies to an ill-equipped clinic or hospital in a developing country.

Social Entrepreneurism focused on women
Connie Duckworth appearing December 4th, Annual Social Enterprice Event - Hosted by CIMCO and ACG Denver! Details Here
Connie Duckworth, Founder/CEO, ARZU - Keynote Speaker at Annual Social Entrepreneurship ACG Denver & CIMCO Denver enclosure-voice 1295_ 10/15/12 - Social entrepreneur Connie Duckworth founded ARZU, (which means “hope” in Dari), in 2004, to empower destitute women weavers in rural Afghanistan. Connie serves pro bono as Chairman and CEO. Starting with 30 weavers, ARZU has transformed into a learning laboratory for holistic grassroots economic development —today employing some 700 women, providing access to education and basic healthcare, seeding multiple micro-business start-ups, building community centers, pre-schools and parks, and creating award-winning fair-labor rugs—all in a country ranked as “the world’s worst place to be a woman.” Ms. Duckworth retired in 2001 as a Partner and Managing Director of Goldman Sachs, the first woman to be named a sales and trading partner in the firm’s history. She tells us she really wanted to rebalance how she spent her time. So she envisioned 1/3 business activities, 1/3 philanthropic activities and 1/3 family oriented activities. ARZU became the focus of her philanthropy. ARZU is an example of a 'for benefit corporation'. It uses private sector practices to create jobs in very remote rural villages in Afghanistan, and produces export quality products. Because of her business lens, Connie sees a social business as the way to empower people through employment. It seemed like a natural fit as Connie's passion has always been women's rights. To Connie, the shortest path is through economic advancement. The women in Afghanistan are truly among the most disadvantaged women in the world.
