It’s hard to imagine a job that doesn’t use a computer in some way shape or form, yet Colorado’s school system has struggled to close the technology gap for under-re sourced youth. In 2013 KidsTek has expanded its reach to three additional school districts, added one new Business Computing program, and continued programs from previous years. Richard Liner, president of the KidsTek organization said, "We would like to invite you to share our successes and help us continue our technology education programs in 2014 and beyond. Wednesday, February 19, 2014 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Fritz Knobel School of Hospitality, University of Denver", for this year's annual Tech Leader's Dinner. Today KidsTek serves close to 900 students, the mission of KidsTek is to increase the technology literacy of students at Colorado's highest-needs schools through our innovative after school, project based enrichment programs, and our in-school technical certification programs. KidsTek provides an extensive technology curriculum for our host schools with the goal of providing the tools for long-term academic and career success. It has, because of the Internet's international reach, raised international governance challenges. Notably, a number of Internet pioneers, along with the US government, have balked at proposals to centralize aspects of key Internet governance at the United Nations. This year's Digital Broadband Migration conference on February 9-10, examined the range of Internet governance issues on the horizon, including strategies for addressing competition policy concerns, social policy issues in the wake of the technological transition, and the appropriate institutional strategies for developing sound Internet policy.

1500_ 2/10/14 - ..an industrialist designer turned entrepreneur, Jules Pieri is the CEO and cofounder of The Grommet, a company that launches undiscovered products and helps them succeed. The Grommet is Jules' third startup and she is an entrepreneur in residence at Harvard Business School. Terry Morreale and Larry Nelson take us on a very interesting journey with Jules Pieri NCWIT Hero. .. Jules wasn't a born entrepreneur, it came of necessity, she likes working for other people. "Because", she said, "it's easier and frankly I'm a tougher boss." Over the course of her career she watched how the best products don't win. "That's almost anti-American or anti capitalism to say that, because we think that the market decides and that's far from true. Today, people have a chance to make their product succeed in one of two ways. Either as a large organization that can muscle their way through, or, it's kind of a lucky break scenario where Oprah calls or something really big happens. It's a crummy business plan and it means a lot of really good products don't see the light of day. That was a business opportunity that somebody had to see - it just had to get done. Her teacher gave her a sense of possibility
1502_ 2/10/14 - Jules' teacher gave her a sense of possibility outside of where she could get to, on her bike. In elementary school Jules read every biography and autobiography in her little school library. "Those lessons were really important", she said, "I really did get the sense that an ordinary person could do something extraordinary. But people in my neighborhood didn't go to college, people went to jail!" Then in 91-92 Jules was working for Keds the shoe company and Meg Whitman who ended up running eBay and running for governor of California, came in. Jules said, "she landed on my head as my boss. I ended up following her working for her directly in three different companies - I would call her a leadership role model, it mattered that she was a woman on some level, I suppose. But I worked for her for so long I definitely enjoyed and learned a lot of her techniques and how she worked with people." Jules has been through a lot and we asked what was the toughest ... We started the business in 2008 when the sky was falling and working on the 'Maker Movement' before... nobody had a name for what we were working on. A lot of the things we knew about were just invisible to the average investor. And the average investor was scared to death. We almost died three times, almost bankrupt three times, and that's no fun, to come up with that plan and imagine unwinding the business. Then you just have to do what you have to do. Most critical characteristic of an entrepreneur...
1501_ 2/10/14 - There is a higher level of commitment when you start a company and the buck stops with you. "I started the company when I was 47, and that's pretty meaningful because I have three sons and the youngest was in middle school at that time and basically my boys were somewhat autonomous. That made a big difference for me because it would have been really hard to do this at the level of commitment I made, and the tough economic times where the wind was definitely in our face. If I'd done it at an earlier stage in my life... I was definitely more efficient and had a better network than I did when I was younger, I was more confident in my decisions. My cofounder and I took a 'divide and conquer' approach, never doing the same thing together if one of us could do it. It helps to have a strong cofounder. But, I will say it was very difficult, with kids in college, husband's work dried up, difficult economic times..." her brother died and Jules had a little battle with cancer herself. Basically Jules was just getting worn out, an unusual feeling for her and she did have to re calibrate and focus on really basic things that you could read in any health magazine, really disciplined about exercise. She's experienced a lot both personally and professionally, Grommet is on an exciting road of success, they grew 450% last year.

1498_ 2/3/14 - Colorado's Communication Tech Professionals are getting ready to tell us about another great leader... about Mike Fries, John Malone, Chairman of Liberty Global said, "I have worked closely with Mike for over a decade and was involved in many of the international operations he helped start and manage long before this. I continue to be impressed by his energy, drive and his leadership as CEO of Liberty Global, and proud of the contributions he's made to Colorado... This award is well deserved." The CEY award recognizes the Colorado communication executive that demonstrates the highest standard of leadership, vision and social responsibility. Mike Fries was honored at the CTP annual awards dinner on April 7th at the Brown Palace. Larry asked for an overview of Liberty Global. Mike replied, "...80% of our revenue comes out of Europe. In the last ten years, we've actually re balanced the business pretty considerably. Ten years ago, if we were doing this interview, we would have been in 26 countries with about $11.3 Billion in revenue. Today we're in 14 countries with $9 Billion in revenue. We've focused on markets and on regions where we could achieve great scale, and that's typically for us been in Europe. A few years ago we exited Japan, that was a very substantial and long term investment for us. We redeployed that money into our own stock but also into Germany early in 2010 and then we announced another acquisition in Germany. So we spent $9 billion buying German cable operations in the last 12 months. But that's because we see great potential in that part of the world and for us concentrating in that part of the world brings lots of benefits. So hopefully being in Denver is the center of our world, we are in four or five continents and Denver is the center of anything, but more and more a corporate focus in Europe. I've been doing this for over 20 years. I was founding equity partner with Gene Schneider when we founded UIH, shortly after United Cable was sold to TCI. So I've essentially been doing this type of job, international cable, for 20+ years. I've been CEO of Liberty Global for six years, as part of a merger between UGC, a company we had formed and Liberty Media International. Waste is a waste of resources - Greenology
1499_ 2/10/14 - Here is a Colorado success story driving sustainability solutions in the food service packaging industry. This movement of 'zero waste' is effectively trying to say, 'how do we take things that used to go to the trash and recycle them or compost them so we're minimizing the amount that goes to the landfill?' Ian Jacobson, COO/CFO of Eco-Products deals with institutions that have to take care of their own waste, think of restaurants or restaurant like operators whether that's caterers or anyone who sets the table... a hotel, university or at stadiums as well. Boulder has been the leader in this movement going way back. Boulder is a remarkable business community. Larry asked, what's coming down the road? "Increasingly this concept of 'zero waste'. Look at Google Trends and you can see how that is building over time. This movement is changing the way universities are operating - it's changing the way stadiums are operating." Of course, we have to give a shout out to Ed von Bleichert, manager of the CU Boulder Environmental Operations, Department of Facilities Management . Ed is constantly being called out to universities around the country to lend his expertise and he'll be speaking for Ian's organization later this month in Florida. Ian points out that CU Folsom field is already effectively a Zero Waste Zone, moving as much as they can to compost or recycling. We're hoping to see the major league sports here follow suit, the way they have in Seattle or San Francisco. Some of these other emerging markets for waste diversion are really setting the tone in terms of what is capable. We see that coming here to Denver next.

Working together to accomplish incredible goals
1496_ 2/3/14 - Today we are talking with Ruthe Farmer the director of Strategic Initiatives at NCWIT. "Aspirations In Computing is a national recognition and talent development program for girls in technology. The idea is to identify girls at the high school level that are showing interest, an aptitude and give them a reason to stay, in fact give them lots of reasons to stay. Girls apply for the rewards program every fall and just last month we've been selecting girls for award ceremonies all over the country. We've just selected our 35 national winners, and that group of girls is the top 1.5% of all the applicants. This year NCWIT/Aspirations in Computing had about 2500 applicants. These girls are really the cream of the crop, and we will be recognizing them at Bank of America HQ in Charlotte, N. C. at the Ritz Carlton and this fabulous weekend that Bank of America provides for them. They'll meet a lot of technical women from Bank of America, learn a lot about the information security industry and what goes into technology in banking, receive a trophy and a wonderful ceremony and a lot of gifts from our sponsors - including a laptop, cash.... it's going to be really exciting. So that's happening March 14-16th" said Ruthe. Larry recalled being at one of the award ceremonies a few years back, and one young woman had told him that she really didn't want to get into computers or technology but the NCWIT challenge came along and it just snowballed - she was one of the winners. 1497_ 2/3/2014 - It is inspirational, futuristic, exciting and you should get prepared to be thrilled. The face of the space industry is changing and there are great new opportunities. .... At the 26th National Space Symposium, Larry and Pat had an opportunity to have a discussion with Leonard Nimoy of Star Trek fame. But Nimoy is so much more than that. They decided to talk about other topics that help us learn more about him and what has shaped his character over the past 79 years as well as understanding his hot buttons. We started out by reflecting on some poetry Leonard read as 'whale song' was heard in the background...that was decades ago but it opened up insights to his current interests and concerns. When asked, Is there something businesses can do to motivate children?" His reply was an ouch. "I'm not a sociologist, I'm not a businessman, I can't speak intelligently about that. I'll tell you what I am concerned about; I'm concerned about how much television kids watch that is not uplifting, or educational or inspiring in any way. It's all about celebrity, and if you're celebrity, come and tell us about your celebrity. What have you accomplished? I'm a celebrity - I'm famous for having a lot of children, so I want a TV show - It's crazy. What we have descended to in our education, it's crazy! It's really sad, I could go on about that, I'm not going to." He had a great deal to say about advice he would give to someone following his career path. "The biggest fantasy, myth about my work, about being an actor is people who think a look will get you somewhere, be at the right place and time, that kind of thing - luck plays a big role, but I never believed that, not even as a teenager... Education, it's all about education. Learn, learn, learn and devote yourself to a profession. Be professional about it." Larry asked, "Do you feel the U.S. is losing its position in terms of space?" Leonard replied, "Yes, I don't know to what degree this is true. I don't want to be an alarmist about this, but I do think we've got some work to do." We did end with a Vulcan salute.
