Discussing the benefits of social business enterprise
1136_ 1/2/2012 - Behind the scene with a candid moment, Kim Jordan, CEO/Founder, New Kim Jordan, Founder/CEO, New Belgium Brewing and Keynote spaker at ACG Denver, 5th Annual Social/Business Entrepreneurship Event December 2011 Chris Pelley, Managing Director/Founder, CIMCO - Capital Investment Managemetn Company and Leader of the Social Enterprise trend locally in Colorado and internationally.Belgium Brewing, Chris Pelley, Managing Director/Founder, CIMCO and Larry Nelson of w3w3.com discuss the benefits of social business enterprise. We get an update on Roisin Pelley's work in India and much to Kim's delight, Larry confesses to his love for Fat Tire. We're off to a good start. Of course, Chris Pelley is the leader in our region, in fact, our state in the area of social enterprise/entrepreneurship and we're grateful he's brought Kim Jordan's company New Belgium Brewing Company to our attention. How could you not want to work there? When you hear Kim talk about her people, the teams and the culture - it's a great lesson for new entrepreneurs, but also for established older companies. Kim's response was, "I'm always impressed by my 'co-workers'. Sometimes they make me cry because they're so dedicated, creative and playful. I still have many pinch me moments." Twice a year New Belgium Brewing has their 'New Owner Induction" that's when you've passed the mark for being one year vested for the employee stock ownership plan, they have a ceremony and Kim makes a Mojo for every person who is in that six month time frame. People say it's their favorite day of the year because of the enthusiasm from the new owners about why this is important to them. First year anniversary, employees are presented with a bicycle and at the fifth year, Kim, takes them to Belgium for a week, traveling around and learning about beer culture. Their annual retreat has been very powerful because it creates a level of trust and transparency and also an expectation that people be involved. There's much more detail about tapping into your people's strengths... Watch and Listen Now.

Expanding Colorado's High Speed Internet Service
Rotary Denver - Harriet Downer, Seth Patterson and John Klug representing the Rotary Colorado High Speed Internet Project... Rotary helps complete the middle mile, bringing high speed interent to every school district in Colorado. There's still work to be done...

enclosure-voice 1138_ 1/2/2012 - w3w3® Media Network looks forward to the annual Colorado Rotary State of the State reception at the Governor's mansion in Denver because they always have an important and valuable project to share with us. This year we're speaking with three people working on the Colorado High Speed Internet Project. Committee Chair Harriet Downer has a consulting firm Logical Connections, she is here in the capacity of Chair of the Colorado High Speed Internet Project along with Seth Patterson, president of the Rotary Club of Denver [and commercial real estate broker]. John Klug, the third member of our trio, says he's never worked harder and never made less - but he spends about half his time on Rotary which excites him so much, and that's his story. Seth is convinced the most important thing he can be involved in is education because it leverages everything else and ultimately should provide a solution to every other problem. John Klug, said, "We looked out a couple of years ago and we saw that Colorado was forty-sixth in the nation in terms of internet speed and was paying 10 - 15 times the cost that our neighbor states of Nebraska and Utah were paying." The Eagle Net (Educational Access Gateway Learning Environment Network) Project is part of the solution - it's the middle mile. Beyond that there's a need to connect all the classroom buildings, a need for technology in classrooms, digital content and we need to train teachers how to use this. That's really the next phase of the project. Our plan is to mobilize all of Rotary in Colorado as well as other service clubs. The problem and the need is big enough. To engage with local school districts learn and help them determine the needs and then help meet those. Larry asked what individuals and businesses can do to help. "Keep the conversation going. We have 21 months to get this done - August 2013. And this is an interstate system - without the connection into the community, it's an interstate without entrances and exits. It's the community that will take it from the school district building into the classrooms that empower the communities and that's our charge. This will impact every home and business by providing gigabyte access to every part of the Colorado." Get involved, there's more to listen to...

Vic Ahmed, CEO, Plug & Play Colorado, Founder, Innovation
Pavilion, CEO - Business Genetics Eco system for people to build and accelerate companies
enclosure-voice 1132_ 12/26/11 - We are here at for an exciting event; the building is fabulous, 80,000 square feet, called the Innovation Pavilion, and we are talking with the chairman Vic Ahmed also CEO of Plug and Play Colorado and President of TiE Rockies. We asked Vic for an overview and he tells us this is a conglomeration of a number of things that form the eco system for people to be able to build and accelerate companies. Vic has formed a partnership with Plug and Play which is the most successful incubator ever, based out of Silicon Valley, started by the visionary entrepreneur, Saeed Amidi. This incubator has helped over 600 companies with over $750 million, and at any one point in time there are about 350 companies they incubate. It is quite a phenomenon and they have unbelievable access to investors, VC's, angel investors and corporate partners to make investments. "So now, said Vic, "with our situation, with investments in Colorado being rather weak, we're going to be able to provide access for Colorado companies to this network. The time has come for innovation, the time has come for entrepreneurship to go mainstream. We have always been innovative, but it has been left to a small percent to carry the burden of innovation and entrepreneurship. Our whole country is becoming a country of innovators and entrepreneurs. The little boy or girl who grows up is no longer looking to join a big corporation, but are looking to start their own company." Vic believes the whole scenario has changed now. Vic is working with Governor Hickenlooper's office and a number of departments and areas within the state. He said he believes Colorado is really fortunate at this critical juncture in time to have a governor who is all about job creation through innovation and entrepreneurship. Vic feels fortunate too, to have the opportunity to work with the governor, his cabinet, Kristen Russell, Ken Lund - Office of Information Technology who heads the Office of Economic Development and International Trade, and also TJ Deora, Director of Governor’s Energy Office. Recently the Governor announced the formation of the Colorado Innovation Network [COIN] and Kelly Quann is the Executive Director, a very exciting development as it is the mission of this organization is to make Colorado the most innovative state in the country...here's more...

Laurie Fitzgerald, Founder, The Consultancy Focusing on the area of organizational design and transformation
enclosure-voice 1134_ 12/26/11 - We're here today with a person, right here in Denver. However this person goes all over the world, from Argentina to Europe, all over the place. Laurie Fitzgerald, PhD is the founder and president of The Consultancy Inc. Larry loves her website, one of his favorite topics is chaos [author of Mastering Change in the Midst of Chaos]. Laurie has, for the past 30 years focused in the area of organizational design and transformation. That is bringing about whole system, profound change in organizations. Laurie's interest is really drawn to those organizations that see a need to bring themselves into the future by changing fundamentally who they are and what they do. Laurie in her own words, "If you recognize as do we the dire necessity of replacing the conventional wisdom with a new and more powerful lens on reality, you will certainly appreciate the fact that a profound shift in our understanding of how our organizations work has been triggered in the 20th century by an astonishing explosion of scientific discoveries culminating in what we know simply as Chaos. We invite you to join us on our mission to make the principles of this so-called "new science" both applicable to and actionable in the design and transformation of the 21st century business enterprise. Laurie goes onto explain the chaos theory, "Formal moniker - the 'Theory of Complex, Dynamical, Non-linear, Far-From-Equilibrium (FFE) Systems' - perhaps you can see why its formulators, a hodgepodge of post-grad students at the University of California at Santa Cruz representing a variety of disciplines ranging from astrophysics to mathematics, chose to speak of it by its nickname instead. In any event, suffice to say that their chaos theory stands right up there along with Einstein's Relativity and quantum mechanics as one of the most paradigm-shattering discoveries of 20th century science. Dr. Fitzgerald has partnered with executive teams in the implementation and management of large system change in a wide variety of industries including manufacturing, engineering, retail, service, healthcare, medical, pharmaceutical, banking, insurance & finance, aerospace, mining, and telecommunications, as well as with local, national and international government, and law enforcement. Laurie also shares some insights and experiences with an international client...

Teach for America or a Peace Corps for Geeks
Jennifer Pahlka, Founder & CEO, Code for America an NCWIT Hero!enclosure-voice 1135_ 1/2/2012 - The National Center for Women In Technology (NCWIT) is very proud to bring the stories of incredible you women to your attention. We are talking with Jennifer Pahlka, founder of Code for America. She recently described Code for America, "It's like a Teach for America or a Peace Corps for Geeks". People in government, senior managers with projects they think could benefit from web based solutions can make an appeal to Code for America to get volunteer help to build these projects out. This is not the first thing Jennifer has done, she's a serial entrepreneur and has extensive experience in gaming and media. Jennifer says they're a new organization having just finished up their first fellowship year. They had 19 fellows work with them all year long and work with the cities doing great projects. An example of one project is the "Adopt a Fire Hydrant App", which came out of the fact that fellows go visit their cities for five weeks. Their Boston team was treated to a massive 'snowpocalypse' and they saw the city struggling to clear the streets. They never really get to digging out the fire hydrants, but the citizens were right in front of them and they could dig them out. So the 'fellows' created a little web app that allowed the citizen to clean the fire hydrant and agree to dig it out when it snows. Jennifer's advice to a budding entrepreneur: You have to really care, deeply care about the problem you're trying to solve and think it's an important problem. And care about your people. If you don't deeply care about your work others won't either and you won't be successful. Jennifer didn't feel like an entrepreneur until she came up with the idea for Code for America. She suddenly felt she could be incredibly useful to the world and she could make a difference and it was the power of the idea and the notion that no one else was going to do it that made her start this organization. Hot new trends in marketing your company
Melodie Reagan, Crazy Good Marketing - January 2, 2012enclosure-voice 1137_ 1/2/2012 - "The demand for marketing and marketing projects all the way through to individual marketers became so high..." that Melodie Reagan launched this new brand from i2i Workforce, called Crazy Good Marketing. "It is a full service marketing firm with a twist", says co-founder, Melodie Reagan. Larry asked Melodie with all the hot new trends, how do we stay ahead? Melodie replied, “Well you stay ahead of the trends by paying attention to them. There is one that I'd like to share, because I think it will be impactful. I'm referring to one that started in Europe and bring it back to America. There's a firm called Iconoculture, they've identified a macro trend. It's called "National Gross Happiness. Why it relates to America? There are some trends going on in America in our markets and they're called 'Random Acts of Kindness', generosity and cause with a fact and fundamentally what this trend is about is political and economic uncertainty are putting a spotlight on how we feel and about our happiness and can we make a difference." Listen for more details. Melody goes on, "The Kern Organization completes an annual study of top marketing executives and for 2011 the number one trend that they pointed out is better integration of online and offline data collection and analytics is essential. It is essential and needs to be measurable for marketing. In terms of the online to offline, it really is about your market. Social media is important; it's about interaction - engaging with your prospects and your customers. At a minimum, any business today needs a website, and they need to get into LinkedIn and setup a page. What they do beyond that really and truly depends upon the market. If you're in a real high-end, face-to-face sell, all the social media isn't as critical - but again, Melodie says she's going to tell you website and LinkedIn. If you're selling to consumers - mobile, location based is very critical. We now have more and more smart phones. The other thing Melodie states with reaching various customers, for example w3w3.com, you provide a mechanism to reach businesses in Colorado. Very simply do things where you're getting an interaction with interviews or blogs with w3w3..." Listen for more insightful ideas...

Startup Colorado Launch, Why Boulder Panel Moderated by
Brad Feld, Panelists, Yoav Lurie, Justin Segall, Alexander White and Dave Wright
Initiative aimed at company creation along the Front Range
enclosure-voice 1133_ 12/26/11 - At the Startup Colorado Public Launch at Silicon Flatirons, University of Colorado Law School in November, Brad Feld chaired the panel titled ‘Why Boulder?’ with panelists: Yoav Lurie, Founder & CEO, Simple Energy; Justin Segall, Founder & EVP, Simple Energy; Alexander White, Co-Founder & CEO, Next Big Sound, Inc.; and Dave Wright, Founder & CEO, Solid Fire. Startup Colorado, an initiative aimed at company creation along the Front Range, publicly launched in Boulder. It is affiliated with the Startup America Partnership, announced earlier this year to bring together entrepreneurs, investors, top-level executives and educators to foster the growth of innovative companies. Startup Colorado is chaired by Brad Feld and Phil Weiser in Boulder and Jan Horsfall in Colorado Springs. Startup Colorado is a regional initiative, with a heavy focus on Boulder, at least initially. In addition to launching in Boulder, the program plans to create an entrepreneurial summer camp in Boulder where college students from throughout Colorado will work as interns for Boulder startups. The New York Times featured the city last year with the headline 'a magnet for high-tech startups.' Phil Weiser, Dean of the Law School at CU and founder and director of the Silicon Flatirons Center has worked tirelessly for years, even serving two years in Washington D.C. at the White House and is credited by many for the federal focus on Boulder. Of course, Brad Feld and the Foundry Group, local Boulder based venture capitalists, along with Tech Stars has garnered much attention for Boulder as well. Vic Ahmed from TiE Rockies delivered opening remarks and represents a strong Denver influence with the Innovation Pavilion and the Governor's initiative called COIN. This panel, Why Boulder, features young Boulder business leaders who have flourished under the mentoring and guidance of local Boulder TechStars. More than 50 companies, including w3w3.com, have committed over $1 billion in products and services to help young companies grow. Brad says ...Listen for more ideas and details... .
